Blue Christmas Service

First Covenant Church

Date / Time:
December 21 | 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm

As Christmas is one of the few reliable times that most families gather, the absence of certain members is noticeable. Whether they are gone because of divorce, distance, disease, or death – the reason doesn’t matter – the feelings of pain and resentment are present. Instead of being a time of holiday and good cheer, people are keenly aware of their losses. And to make things even worse: there is an expectation to be happy; so not only is grief discouraged, feelings of joy must be faked. Christmas and the holidays can be some of the loneliest days of the year.

A Blue Christmas service exists to be a place to mourn and recognize the negative feelings that surround us. Many have surrendered a dream, lost employment and financial security, said goodbye to familiar routines and are overwhelmed with the rapid pace of a changing world. There are many reasons for people to lament and feel sorrow, and this is the place to explore it. This service takes place on the 21st because the winter solstice is the longest night of the year, the day with the shortest daylight. Even in the darkest times we believe that there is a light ahead, we know that the light of the world is coming in just a few days. This will be a service of music, prayers and reflection.

The Blue Christmas service is not limited to only people who have suffered loss this past year, but to anyone who has a hard time at the holidays and would like a safe space. It is okay to not be okay. You are invited and welcome to invite anyone else who would benefit from such a service. Let us sit in the discomfort and darkness together this year before we approach the light of the world coming to bring good news.
